Motorsports Software Tools Product Lead

Concord, NC

Description

Hybrid: Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time, but the general expectation is that the employee be onsite at Concord, NC at minimum three (3) days each week.

The Role

This role will work within the GM Motorsports engineering organization to guide the technical development for our Motorsports software tools. The GM Motorsports software group develops and maintains numerous software applications to support Race Strategy analysis, timing & scoring visualization, competitor intelligence, as well as vehicle simulation, vehicle setup and outing, and part tracking, all within a unified data architecture.

The Motorsports Software Tools Product Lead will primarily focus on the continual development and enhancement of in-race software tools to drive more-informed decision-making during competition. It is essential that are you well versed in the application of these tools in a competitive environment, driven by a vision to pioneer new software capabilities, and possess an understanding of data architecture and coding to effectively convey feature objectives to development team and collaborate with software leads to prioritize work items. Building and maintaining productive relationships with external race team partners and stakeholders internal to GM motorsports will be a key to success in this position. This role will require working a flexible schedule to monitor tool performance during live sessions and travel to select race events.

What You'll Do

  • Engage with external Race Team personnel and internal users to understand software use cases, current limitations, and customer requests for future enhancements.
  • Employ tools during live events to gain performance insight. Critically assess software tools performance, debug new features, document behavior, and define specifications for future work items.
  • Conceptualize future features and enhancements. Evaluate the functionality of complete GM motorsports software package, identify capability gaps and develop strategies to best integrate tools and data between platforms.
  • Collaborate with IT management to prioritize future features, effectively balancing immediate needs with working toward long-term development objectives.
  • Work closely with software developers to convey tool use cases, user needs, and feature requirements to ensure enhancements are efficiently developed and meet expectations.
  • Manage internal and external communications, lead training sessions, and develop tutorials to promote adoption and increase competitiveness of GM supported race teams through effective software utilization.
  • Periodically travel to race and test events to support on-track activity, build relationships, and gather feedback.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related subject
  • 6+ years of experience in a top-level motorsports series including IndyCar, F1, NASCAR, IMSA, WEC, or similar professional racing series
  • Intimate knowledge motorsports software tools including those around inventory management, setup and outing documentation, timing and scoring, race strategy, simulation, and track time-history data visualization
  • Proficient programing in python, MATLAB, or similar language
  • Extensive experience analyzing motorsports data to derive actionable recommendations
  • Exceptional ability to foster collaboration and navigate relationships with a variety of external and internal partners

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Race Engineering experience in NASCAR, IndyCar, F1, IMSA, WEC, Formula E with intimate knowledge of race car setup, event preparation, technical inspection, race procedures and race strategy
  • Proficiency in Motorsports data analysis software including Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec or similar
  • Experience with timing & scoring tools including SBG Race Watch, HH Timing or similar
  • Familiarity with timing feeds provided by each racing series: Rmonitor, Multiloop, SMT, ERDP, RIS, ALKAMEL
  • Experience motorsports event and vehicle preparation workflows
  • Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and the use of data reduction methods and metrics analysis for race events, on-track testing, lab testing (chassis/engine dyno, SPMM, 7-post), and Driver in the loop simulator
