Engineer, Software Engineer (Java, Angular)

This position will support the Integrated Digital Services BSA within Nationwide Financial. The role is an entry level Software Engineer supporting the Backup Plan Agile line. The line primarily supports the Sales and Server Center (SSC) web site which is focused on providing tools and capabilities to investment professionals allowing them to manage new and existing clients.

The team works on a variety of technologies, with qualified candidates possessing:

  • A good understanding of development practices and languages. We primarily work with Java, Angular, and Oracle DB.

  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal

  • Agile competencies:

    • A continuous improvement mindset

    • Willingness to pair/swarm/mob program

    • Willingness to be polyskilled within the team and be open to helping other disciplines when needed

    • Have a fail fast and improve mindset

Other nice to have skills include:

  • Cloud Infrastructure Technologies - Docker, Kubernetes, AWS - 1 year or more

  • DevOps Tools - Git, Jenkins, Concourse - 1 year or more

  • Ruby Test automation - 1 year or more

As a Software Engineer, you will focus primarily on providing high quality, efficient technology solutions to business partners by crafting new software applications or modifying and/or supporting existing packaged or custom-built applications. In this capacity, you’ll code, configure, test, debug, document and maintain applications.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develops, tests, debugs, documents and deploys software according to standards and best practices.

  • Uses DevSecOps practices, tooling and techniques.

  • Adopts continuous improvement and learning.

  • Handles project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables proactively.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to a Technology Manager/Director. 

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems or other related degree. Technology experience or non-traditional technology certificates can be substituted for an undergraduate degree. 

Experience: One or more years of technology experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proficiency of at least one programming language such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, etc. Knowledge of software development lifecycle. Good problem-solving skills. Ability to thrive in a team environment. Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus. 

Other criteria, such as competencies and experiences, may take precedence. 

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the Director and HR Officer.

Working Conditions: Office environment may vary based on team and/or location. Associates may have on-call responsibility after normal working hours and/or on weekends.
