Senior Staff Engineer - Delivery Platform

About the Role

Lead the design and implementation of a broad scale re-architecture of the Uber Eats and Grocery backend focused on discovery and hydration. This role will require collaborating across multiple director and VP level orgs to align work and release iterative and reliable improvements.

You will need to understand product requirements and business needs in order to build the necessary abstractions and features through the Edge APIs all the way down to pulling data from dependent services for hydration and product or store data for search and browse.

The Delivery Platform team at Uber directly impacts our ability to surface the right products to customers at the right time, while enabling our merchants to enable a broad and discoverable catalog. Delivery includes our Uber Eats, Grocery, and Retail products, where we focus on getting goods from a merchant to a customer.

Our team owns serving, indexing, and hydration within our search and discovery experience, supporting multiple data retrieval methods from Lucene based search to exact-match queries and more. We also own multiple internal reliability and ops tools to allow for a higher bar in reliability, chaos testing, and deployment safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with senior engineers and leaders across multiple Director and VP orgs to design and implement the next generation of the Delivery backend.
  • Optimize performance and cost of our serving stack.
  • Design and drive adoption for new tools to enable better efficiency and availability for our developers and ops teams.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or related field AND 4-years full-time Software Engineering work experience
  • OR 7-years full-time Software Engineering work experience, WHICH INCLUDES 4-years total technical software engineering experience in one or more of the following areas:
  • Programming language (e.g. C, C++, Java, Python, or Go)
  • Note the 4-years total of specialized software engineering experience may have been gained through education and full-time work experience, additional training, coursework, research, or similar (OR some combination of these). The years of specialized experience are not necessarily in addition to the years of Education & full-time work experience indicated.
  • Distributed systems.
  • Scalability and reliability engineering.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in large scale applications of Apache Lucene, OpenSearch, ElasticSearch, or equivalent.
  • Experience building and migrating to hardened interfaces for data access.

For Canada-based roles: The base salary range for this role is CAD$218,000 per year - CAD$242,000 per year.

For New York, NY-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$252,000 per year - USD$280,000 per year.

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD$252,000 per year - USD$280,000 per year.
